NOTES : Summer 2018
Dear Highlands Shrine Club and Sebring Order of the Eastern Star
As mentioned in my last message to you in June, there will not be an “official” newsletter for July. But I do want to mention that our second annual summer picnic at the Shrine Club will be going on in that month: on Wednesday, July 4th (see below).
WEDNESDAY, JULY 4th - CELEBRATE THE DAY WITH AN “INDOOR” PICNIC AT THE HSC CLUB AT NOON (eat at 1 p.m.) - We will have a fun afternoon eating delicious food, socializing, playing games, and celebrating the day’s event. The Club will provide hot dogs and hamburgers (compliments of the Dart group); $3/each to cover cost of picnic items. All attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. Members, Ladies and guests are invited to attend – “the more the merrier”! Come out for an enjoyable time. Please phone the Club at 382-2208, and leave your message on the Club’s answering machine with your name, the number attending, and the item you would like to bring for the picnic. Don’t forget to wear your patriotic colors: red, white and blue. SEE YA THERE!
If you were at the HSC Memorial Day picnic on Monday, May 28, you know what a good time we ALL had. As usual the food was delicious and abundant, and we had a good crowd that attended. Several brought their friends which made it even more fun! Lady Marilyn Wilkin held a well attended BINGO game where several of the winners purchased a Cadillac with their winnings! (just joking, but it was fun). Lady Marilyn said she would hold another BINGO game this time, too. The Dart players were there showing off their skills, and there was corn hole for those who weren’t too full from lunch. Many of our members and friends just like to sit around and socialize; there’s plenty of room for them, too. So put Wednesday, July 4th on your calendar and plan to attend. THANK YOU!
This is a message to our Sebring Eastern Star members (many of you belong to both Star and the Shrine Club):
1. There will not be a monthly breakfast at the Depot Restaurant in July. Noble John Devany and the crew will be on a much-deserved vacation. But we will hosting our OES breakfast again on Saturday, August 4 (mark your calendars). See you there then….
2.Saturday, August 25 at 5 p.m. Sebring Eastern Star will be sponsoring an annual Rob Morris (founder of OES) dinner. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDAR. It was decided that we would meet at the Olive Garden for a dutch-treat meal, and honoring. Unfortunately last year, we had a problem with seating at our reserved time. I will be making reservations this year, and will be sure to mention the difficulty to the manager so that it won’t happen again!
Please note that I will begin accepting reservations for our Rob Morris dinner on Saturday, August 18. I look forward to hearing from you all at that time….
Just one more thing….. I try to make sure that everyone is contacted about the information of upcoming OES, Shrine and Mason’s events. The news is sent out by e-mail to members those who are on-line and/or a hard copy is mailed via the US mail to our members who are not on e-mail. If you no longer use e-mail and/or need a hard copy, please let me know at 471-2425! We want everyone to attend our activities, so you don’t miss out on the fun and companionship. Thanks for your cooperation!
Best wishes, Sissel Carr
Dear Nobles and Ladies, June 4, 2018
The newsletter for June (no newsletter in July) is now ready to read on the Highlands Shrine Club’s website: www.highlandsshrine.com (put your browser in the middle of the address, hold down ctrl and click). This should get you into the website. But if you are unable to open the HSC website, you can put the HSC’s address: www.highlandsshrine.com into your computer’s search feature (this is the best way to get into our website) OR phone me at 471-2425 or use my e-mail address firstname.lastname@example.org and I’ll mail a newsletter to your home.
Travel down the topics on the left-hand side in the HSC’s webpage until you read: HSC newsletter for June 2018. Press Enter, and the newsletter will appear. Thanks to Noble Dennis Koranda PP for creating our website and keeping it current. He does a good job for us, despite his medical problems.
Just a reminder that extra newsletters are located in the clear plastic rack next to the Club’s Office door. We want everyone to be informed as to what’s happening around the Club so you don’t miss out, your attendance at all our events is very important to us!
The monthly BBQ events at the Sebring Masonic Lodge are over until the fall, the Poinciana spaghetti and fish dinners, and the Sunday morning breakfasts have ended until the fall, too. Here are the HSC events for June:
As you will read in the newsletter, there aren’t many opportunities for us all to get together in June:
1. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13 at 11:30 a.m. - Lunch at Dimitri’s Family Restaurant, 2710 Kenilworth Blvd., Sebring, FL (behind the Kenilworth Hotel) 385-7323
Please phone the Club at 382-2208 for your reservations (name and number attending); please do not just “drop in” at the restaurant. There is a reserved number of seats/section just for the Shrine Club. Sissel will need to phone the restaurant with a head-count as the date gets closer. THANK YOU!
The summer months at the Shrine Club will be a “kick-back” opportunity for us all. No meetings, no socials, no breakfasts or large a/c bills. But we do want to keep in touch with our members and friends during the summer; therefore, going out to a local restaurant is a good plan for us.
We will still have our summer picnics: Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Friday night weekly games and Stix card games available for us, too.
2. WEDNESDAY MORNING COFFEE & DONUTS - This is a great way to socialize with our members and friends at 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Noble Mike Byers and Lady Mary Jean (and Noble Joe Mize) make our coffee, and attendees bring in the goodies each week; thanks to ALL! A volunteer donation to cover the cost of the a/c and coffee is appreciated. Thank you for supporting this endeavor. This event will probably go on all summer; you will be notified if this changes.
3. TUESDAY, JUNE 26 at 11:30 a.m. - BUNCO is alive and well, and lots of fun to play at the Highlands Shrine Club. This is a lively way to spend the afternoon. The cost is $4 /each. Guys are welcome, too. Friends, family members and the public is invited to attend.
Best wishes, Sissel Carr
Hope everyone has a safe and healthy summer
Please note that the Shrine Club’s activities for the upcoming summer months will be comprised of “indoor” picnics for Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day, as well as a lunch meal or two at local restaurants. Please read your monthly newsletter and e-mails from Sissel so you don’t miss out on the locations and dates. Please phone the Club with number attending when we ask for attendance number at the restaurants.
Just want to say a BIG thank to our members who will be returning to their homes up north for the summer. We appreciate all you do for our Eastern Star and the Masonic organizations. You pitch right in with financial support for our fund raisers, take stations in the Lodges and Chapters, and just add so much to our meetings, etc. Hope you all have a good summer, stay healthy and we hope to see you back again in the fall. Please feel free to write to me during the summer, I’ll pass the messages on to our members.
Let’s pause and remember Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!
Best wishes, Sissel Carr
